The Parent’s Council is a group of parents who give some help to the school, by way of running projects and small events or assisting improvements such as library and garden maintenance. This help can also involve fund raising from coffee mornings, cake sales, a quiz or raffles. The St.Patrick’s Boys National School Parent’s Council forms part of a larger National Parent’s Council (Primary) which has a voice to the Minister of Education. The Principal, Anne Marie Hennigan, a member of the school Board of Management and those who have become involved as parents attend the Parent’s Council monthly meeting.   National Parents Association

At the beginning of each academic year there is an AGM of the Parent’s Council. This is advertised so look out and come to this if possible. As a member you can play a silent or an active role. If you’re not into “committees”, you can simply be at the end of a phone line when we need extra help.

Being on the Parent’s Council is a great way of getting to know the Principal, the teachers and indeed a bit more about the school, it’s programmes and projects. Examples of how the Parent’s Council help the school are:

Setting up for a coffee morning
Making other parents welcome
Selling cakes at cake sales
Covering books in the library
Putting posters up for various initiatives
Giving teachers occasional extra man power
Providing teas and coffees at different events
During a school production, doing make up, assisting costume making or minding classes waiting to go on stage

You cannot always be available so we have a pool of names to call on, which is actually not very often.  From an individual parent’s perspective, you get to know a lot of people through the Parent’s Council. You see more classrooms and get to know more teachers than those your children have. Being a member is not just enjoyable, it gives you a reassurance and confidence in the school that’s educating your child.
