Welcome to our school video.
We have been very busy in the school preparing for TidyTowns 2010. As Dublin Regional winners for 2006 and 2007 & 2008 we wanted to make sure that we kept up the good work. This year Mr.Gleeson and the boys from 5th class have been the driving force behind our 2010 projects.
Our project this year was on sustainable travel. We had our day of action, golden boot award and Walk on Wednesday.
As a Green School we are proud to have recently obtained our 4th Green School Flag and we continue to work on all our green school initiatives. We took part in the National Spring Clean week and were delighted to be asked to take part in the making of the supervalue Ad to launch the Tidy towns year. In May, Hans Wisser, Biodiversity Officer from Fingal County Council brought 5th class to Portrane Beach to take part in a clean up there. The weather conditions were not great but the boys still managed to gather 6 bags of rubbish.
We were very disappointed to return to school a week ago to see the school wall and sign had graffiti on it. We responded very quickly and got it cleaned up.
With the help of parents in the school we did a lot of digging and replanting around the school grounds and to the front of the school.
Tidy Towns are celebrating 50 years and the boys came up withe the idea of 50 Top Tips to keep clean, tidy and green. All the top tips can be seen throughout the school.
This year we also took part in the Notice Nature Project. The aim of the Nature in the Park Project is to highlight the value of green spaces and it's wildlife potential through and 'Environmental Education' programme which took place in the school and in the local park. Andrew Fleming from Irish WildlifeTrust is a welcomed visitor to the school and Andrew has given several talks to the classes on wildlife and has carried out practical tasks e.g. making of bird boxes, identification of plants and trees and will bring a class to the park to talk about insects!
If you can, try and walk to school. By walking to school we get plenty of exercise and fresh air, we reduce the number of cars on the road which has a very positive impact on our environment.
