(Additional online resources for children with special educational needs)

Published by the National Council for Special Education

Entering a second full week of home-schooling, parents are gradually developing a structure to the day, factoring in lessons for school-going children. We are in unchartered territory and for many the prospect of home-schooling is daunting, but parents should be reassured that they are not expected to fill the shoes of a class teacher and cover entire weekly and monthly plans. Rather, parents should be cognisant of the fact that children learn in a variety of ways and in everyday contexts (whether its cooking, washing, cycling, planting, board games, Lego etc.) Opportunities are endless, and as the old adage says, “Every day is a school day”.

Teachers are devising interesting, engaging and accessible resources on various online forums to assist parents and numerous companies and publishers are offering special packages free of charge to support learning in the home setting over the coming weeks. Among the materials compiled by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) are online resources specifically targeting children with Special Educational Needs with input from Speech and Language Therapists and Occupational Therapists.

Reading Eggs is a programme used in our school to assist reading . It is available in both application & website form. Currently Reading Eggs are offering a 2week free trial subscription to parents, after which parents can select to pay and continue using the service if they wish. Reading Eggs caters for children aged 3-13 and also has a maths section called MathSeeds suited to children aged 3-9. Multiple children can use the one account once it has been set up by a parent. Reading Eggs invites the children to take a placement test in order to facilitate their learning at their appropriate ability level. Children can then work through the lessons independently or with the help of an adult. There are bonus printable materials available for each lesson should parents wish to use them. Progress reports are also available to parents to help monitor their child’s learning.
